Printer not connecting to Wi-Fi: what to check at home
In short
Does your printer turn on while your document just sits on the screen? Start by checking the Wi-Fi network, the selected printer and any waiting print jobs. These checks help narrow down the problem before you change the installation.
Start with what changed
Did printing work before you changed your modem, password or computer? Write down that change and the message you see. “Offline” and “paper jam” call for different checks.
If you are booking for a parent, ask for a photo of the printer’s screen. Keep the model name too. This helps you explain the problem without asking your parent to repeat a long series of steps over the phone.
Check both devices’ networks
For local wireless printing, the computer or tablet and printer need to be on the same network. Compare the network names in their settings. Having one device on a guest network and the other on the main network may explain why the printer does not appear. Change one setting at a time.
Look at the print queue
An old waiting document can make troubleshooting harder. Open the printer’s queue in your computer’s printer settings and look at the listed jobs. Cancel only the ones you no longer want to print, then try a page.
Printing from a phone or tablet?
Check that the printer supports printing from your device and both devices use the same Wi-Fi network. In a supported app, the print command then lets you select the printer. Not every app offers that command.
Try a simple print job
Choose a short document and use one device for the test. Look at the selected printer’s name before starting the job. Write down what happens: does the document stay in the queue, does a page come out, or does a message appear?
If another device prints correctly, tell the technician. That comparison provides another clue. On its own, it does not tell you which software to install or prove that the printer is faulty.
When to ask for a home visit
If the checks do not solve the problem, have the printer model, the device you use, the displayed message and any recent changes ready. Mention whether you need help printing from several devices or learning how to repeat the steps on your own.
